Rules

1.各小组制作的载具的地面垂直投影范围不超过一张A4纸;

2.如何更平稳高效地输运货物和乘客并非本次活动的唯一考量,各小组可对运输过程有自己的理解,并且在自我陈述阶段作出解释;

3.各小组需要自行定义“货物”和“乘客”的运输方式;

4.挑战任务只针对制作的载具本身,不能对载具以外的内容提出要求;

5.活动地点为Highbay,全部制作环节必须在指定区域内完成;

6.允许小组之间协商沟通交换材料和工具,但是仅限使用官方提供的物资,不允许使用自带物资;

Carrier-Making Group Activity Record Rubrics

HKUST (GZ) will conduct the 2023 Red Bird MPhil Program Offline Interview from July 28th to 29th. Offline Interview is an essential part of postgraduate selection process for HKUST (GZ), which aims to practice the cross-disciplinary, project-based, innovative talent cultivation model, fully tap the potential of applicants, and select applicants with excellent academic performance and comprehensive abilities for admission.

Red Bird MPhil Program Offline Interview consists of two parts: the first is a group project activity that evaluates applicants' comprehensive qualities and abilities, such as teamwork and communication skills; the second is an individual interview identical to previous online interviews, which evaluates applicants' academic accomplishments.

Activity Introduction

Each group of 5 students is required to create a carrier within the time limit by using the basic materials provided (cardboard, cans, etc.). The carrier should carry both cargo (gold coins/Lego bricks, etc.) and passengers (3D printed red bird models), using the air blower on the shore to efficiently transport them to the other side of the Highbay pool.

Activity Procedure

1.Grouping (via drawing lots) and Material Collection

After registering at the sign-in desk, students will randomly draw lots to determine their groups and then take their seats at the assigned tables with their materials.

2.Phase One - Carrier Production

Each group will have 50 minutes to create their carrier and can test it in the pool multiple times within the time limit. If another team is already testing, groups should wait in line. Each testing session must be no longer than 5 minutes.

3.Phase One - Carrier Testing

After the 50-minutes construction period, all groups are required to pause their work. Staff members will instruct each group to test their carriers for 20 minutes. During this phase, students are encouraged to learn about the design parameters and functions of other groups' carriers.

4.Designing Challenge Tasks

After the phase one, each group will have 15 minutes to create a challenge task based on their own carrier's performance and observations of other groups' designs. Groups must also specify task modification parameters on the provided A, B, and C task cards with identical content (e.g., request for vehicle structure, function, etc.), retaining the A card and submitting only the B and C cards to staff members.

5.Drawing Challenge Tasks

Each group will randomly select a challenge task from the pool of B cards by retrieving the card corresponding to the chosen number. If a group draws their own number, they must return it and choose again.

6.Phase Two - Carrier Production

Each group will have 15 minutes to complete their assigned B challenge tasks as well as their original A challenge tasks.

7.Phase Two - Carrier Testing, Personal Statements, and Group Peer Evaluation

After completing phase two production, each group should test their carriers, provide personal statements, and conduct group peer evaluations.

Notes

1.The carrier's ground projection area must not exceed one sheet of A4 paper.

2.Smooth and efficient transportation of cargo and passengers is not the only consideration of this activity. Each group has the opportunity to explain their transportation process in their personal statement.

3.Each group should determine their method of transporting cargo and passengers (the red bird model).

4.Challenge tasks aim to test the design of the carrier itself and not other aspects of the activity.

5.This activity takes place exclusively in Highbay, and all production must occur within the designated area.

6.Groups should only use materials provided by the activity organizers, and teams are allowed to communicate with each other and exchange materials & tools.

7.The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) holds the final interpretation rights for all rules.
